Join us for the 22nd Sagan Summer Workshop!
The 2022 Sagan Summer Workshop will focus on the topic of exoplanet science in the Gaia era. The ESA Gaia mission has been mapping the Galaxy for over seven years, measuring very accurate positions and motions of over 1 billion stars. It has already greatly contributed to exoplanet science through the determination of more accurate stellar parameters, which in turn improve planet parameters, the detection of stellar companions, and the identification and characterization of young moving groups. In the near future, the unprecedented astrometric accuracy will result in the discovery of new exoplanets, as well as the characterization of known planets. The workshop will introduce the basics of astrometry, the impact of Gaia astrometry on astrophysics, and the astrometric detection and characterization of exoplanets. The synergy between the different planet detection techniques of astrometry, transits, radial velocities, and imaging will be discussed, as well as future advances in astrometry.
We are expecting that this will be a hybrid workshop with both in-person and on-line attendance. The US is currently (mid-February) emerging from the pandemic, and thus we expect to hold this hybrid meeting with a complete in-person component. In-person attendance will follow L. A. County, City of Pasadena, and California Institute of Technology COVID safety guidelines at the time of the workshop (late July).
The Sagan Summer Workshops are aimed at advanced undergraduates, grad students, and postdocs, however all are welcome to attend. There is no registration fee for these workshops.
All attendees will also participate in hands-on tutorials and in-person attendees have the chance to meet in smaller groups with our speakers.
All participants must follow this Code of Conduct.
The registration site asks if you plan to attend the 2022 Sagan Workshop in person or remotely. There is no limit on the number of remote attendees. The in-person attendance is currently limited due to the COVID-19 pandemic and is available on a first come, first served basis. Current regulations mandate that each in-person attendee wear an N95 mask when indoors. In-person registration is contingent on having completed and verified your COVID-19 vaccination and booster (see below). Once the in-person attendance is full, we will establish a wait list. In the months leading up to the workshop, we will be checking in with registrants in case their attendance status changes, however we ask that you contact us if your request for in-person status changes.
Please note that this is currently planned as a hybrid workshop. For remote attendees, we will stream the workshop sessions live and have a Slack channel for remote questions that we will try to answer during the live talks, though the conversation can continue on Slack. Additionally we will make recordings of all talks available on our YouTube channel following the workshop. We will do our best to accommodate remote attendees, but please note that the support for and ability to ask questions about the hands-on sessions may be limited.
All in-person attendees must have received a WHO recognized COVID-19 vaccine and booster. We are using CrowdPass to verify each in-person attendee’s vaccination status. After you register and indicate that you plan to attend the workshop in person, the following steps will happen:
Limited travel support is available for graduate student and postdoctoral associates. The amount of travel support that we can offer is very limited and is only for local costs (hotel and per diem). We cannot provide airfare and applicants are encouraged to seek other sources to augment any travel funds NExScI can provide.
All travel support recipients must follow these travel guidelines.
