2025 Sagan Summer Workshop

Silver Jubilee: Exoplanet Demographics

July 21-25, 2025
Hosted by The NASA Exoplanet Science Institute

California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA

#sagan2025

The topic of the 2025 Sagan Summer Workshop will be the "Demographics of Exoplanets" and will address the contribution of each of the major planet-finding techniques to our overall knowledge of the architecture of exoplanet systems. Along with presentations about each technique and its particular strengths and biases, the workshop will address the synthesis of these results into a complete demographic picture for comparison with models of the formation and evolution of planetary systems. The Workshop will explore gaps in our knowledge and how future missions and surveys will address them. Of particular interest will be understanding the importance of a full demographic picture, including the incidence of Earth-sized planets in the Habitable Zones of their host stars, to future missions such as the Habitable Worlds Observatory.

The 2025 Sagan Summer Workshop will the 25th in this series of workshops. This "Silver Jubilee" will also address the demographics of Workshop attendees over the years with a presentation and discussion of their career trajectories.

The 2025 workshop will be hybrid with both in-person and on-line attendance. The Sagan Summer Workshops are aimed at advanced undergraduates, grad students, and postdocs, however all are welcome to attend. There is no registration fee for these workshops.

Registration

There is no registration fee to attend the workshop either in person or remotely. Register using this link.

For remote attendees, we will stream the workshop sessions live and have a Slack channel for remote questions that we will try to answer during the live talks, though the conversation can continue on Slack. All talks will be available on our YouTube channel following the workshop.

Following the workshop, all attendees will have the opportunity to request a letter of attendance.

PROTO Workshop

Preceding the 2025 Sagan Summer Workshop, there will be an optional add-on half-day PROTO (PROfessional Tools and Opportunities) Workshop on Sunday, July 20, 2025. See here for further information.

Registration is on the same form as the Sagan Summer Workshop so you can register for both using this link.

Participation and Career Impact Survey

As we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Sagan Summer Workshop, we are reflecting on the impact the workshop has had on participants over the years. We would greatly appreciate your insights on how the workshop has influenced your career. Please take a few minutes to complete a brief impact survey.

Code of Conduct

Travel Support Applications due March 20

Limited travel support is available for undergraduate and graduate students, and postdocs. The amount of travel support that we can offer is limited to local costs (hotel and per diem) only. We cannot provide airfare and applicants are encouraged to seek other sources to augment any travel funds NExScI can provide. Please read the travel guidelines; further information will be provided to the successful applicants.

Note that if you are awarded travel support from IPAC/NExScI, you must agree to participate in the hands-on sessions group projects, with informal presentations at the workshop on Friday, July 25. We also strongly encourage all those receiving travel support to submit a poster and/or POP presentation as part of their participation in the workshop.

Click here for the travel support application.

Each application must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation that should be submitted here. The letter should include a short statement about how the student will benefit from attending the workshop and an indication of financial need, including other possible sources of funding.
