The 2015 Sagan Summer Workshop will explore exoplanetary systems through the combined lens of theory and observations. Several observational techniques have now detected and characterized exoplanets, resulting in a large population of known systems. Theoretical models, meanwhile, can synthesize populations of planetary systems as a function of the input physics. Differences between the predicted and the observed distributions of planets provide strong constraints on the physical processes that determine how planetary systems form and evolve, ruling out some old theories while suggesting new ones. Leaders in the field will summarize the current state of the art in exoplanet observations and planet formation theory. Observations needed to discriminate between competing theories will be discussed and compared against the expected improvements in exoplanet detection limits.
Attendees will participate in hands-on exercises in which population synthesis models are tuned to match observations. Attendees will also have the opportunity to present their own work through short presentations (research POPs) and posters.
Videos of all the presentations are available on the NExScI YouTube channel
PDF files of each presentation can be viewed by clicking on the title on the agenda page

The following documents will be used during the hands on sessions. We will have print-outs available at the workshop.
A Simple Model for Planetary Population Synthesis
GlobalPFE: A Practical Guide on How to Run the Model
How Good is Your Model? Comparison with Observations
Group Projects: Exploring Planet Formation
TAR file of the hands-on session codes and exercises
There will be no registration fee for the workshop however, due to space limitations and for planning purposes, we ask that you register here.
Box Lunch Purchase: You may purchase box lunches and a ticket for the workshop dinner on the registration site. There are places on campus and in the area to purchase lunch, however we will have box lunches delivered to the workshop for those who pre-order. This will facilitate "working" lunches and give attendees a chance to network during the lunch breaks. Box lunches consist of a sandwich or salad, chips, cookie, and bottled water.
Workshop Dinner:Tickets for the workshop dinner on Thursday evening (more information here) can also be purchased through the registration site. r

We have very limited funding for financial assistance. While we do have a modest amount of funding to cover local expenses (e.g. shared hotel room, meals), we are not able to provide any airfare support. Each application must be accompanied by an advisor's letter of support showing financial need. Attendees who are awarded lodging support will be asked to share a hotel room at the workshop hotel.

July 3, 2015: deadline for POP and poster abstract submissions by workshop attendees.
July 10, 2015: deadline for talk submissions by workshop speakers.
Workshop attendees may submit two kinds of presentations: POPs and posters, with each submitted separately through the Presentation Submission site (available in early April 2015). You may submit a POP and a poster abstract on the same topic or on different topics. Both are intended to spark discussion during the week and to foster collaborations beyond the workshop.
Research POPs are short (2 minute) presentations. POP slides (maximum of 2 PDF format slides) should be submitted through the online link. The POP schedule will be published roughly two weeks before the workshop.
Posters will be on display outside during the workshop. Posters should be no more than 40 inches wide x 36 inches high.
Due to space limitations, the number of POPs and posters that we can accept is limited. First come, first served!
