August 23 Update: Hands on Sessions Software Available for Download

August 16 Update: Workshop Presentation Videos on the Sagan Workshop YouTube Channel

Videos of the lectures from the 2016 workshop (as well as those from 2014 and 2015) are available on the Sagan Summer Workshop YouTube Channel.

Presentations from the Wednesday morning lectures are available here.

July 25 Update: Presentations Available

Presentations from the workshop are available as links from the talk titles on the agenda page. Videos of the presentations are coming soon!

July 15 Update: Hands-on Sessions

We have posted new information for the hands-on sessions including science papers providing background for each of the sessions and information on how to install the NoMachine client on your computer. You will need NoMachine to access the Amazon cloud during the hands-on sessions. Click here for more information!

July 7 Update: POP schedule

The POP presentation schedule is now available here, along with the list of posters. Note that each poster will have a 4' x 4' (1.2 m x 1.2 m) area for display. This is slightly larger than was originally "advertised".

May 16 Update: Hands-on Sessions and Box Lunch/Dinner Purchase

The hands-on sessions are now full. If you register after today and wish to participate in the hands-on sessions, your name will be placed on a waiting list.

Box lunches and tickets for the workshop dinner may now be pre-purchased with a deadline of July 12. Click here for more information and the purchase information.

Important Note: Due to space limitations, the number of attendees at the workshop will be capped at 175 and the number of participants in the hands-on sessions will be capped at 125. Both these capacities have been reached.

The 2016 Sagan Summer Workshop will focus on data analysis techniques used to find planets in various types of data. In particular, leaders in the field will discuss Monte Carlo Markov Chain (MCMC) and Bayesian inference relevant to transit analysis and spectral retrieval as well as RV analysis. Image processing techniques such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA), LOCI, and KLIP methods will also be discussed. In addition, for each of these areas, noise sources and mitigation strategies will be highlighted. Attendees will participate in hands-on group projects and will have the opportunity to present their own work through short presentations (research POPs) and posters.

There is no registration fee for the workshop. If you have registered and will no longer be able to attend, please let us know so that your spot may be given to someone else.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Data analysis techniques for exoplanet research
  • MCMC modelling
  • Bayesian Inference
  • Principal Component Analysis (PCA)
  • Transits
  • Radial Velocity
  • Noise Sources
  • Mitigation Strategies

POP/Poster/Talk Submission Link now available

Workshop attendees may submit two kinds of presentations: POPs and posters, with each submitted separately through the Presentation Submission site. Both are intended to spark discussion during the week and to foster collaborations beyond the workshop. Due to space limitations, the number of POPs and posters that we can accept is limited. First come, first served!

Research POPs are short (2 minute) presentations. POP slides (maximum of 2 PDF format slides) should be submitted through the online link. The POP schedule will be published roughly two weeks before the workshop.

Posters will be on display outside during the workshop. Note that each poster will have a 4' x 4' (1.2 m x 1.2 m) area for display. This is slightly larger than was originally "advertised".

Financial Support Applications and Letters due March 11, 2016

We have limited funding to cover local expenses (hotel, per diem), however we are not able to offer any airfare support. Successful applicants must following the Travel Guidelines for Attendees. Each application must be accompanied by an advisor's letter of support showing financial need. Attendees who are awarded lodging support will be asked stay at the Pasadena Sheraton.
