The 2003 Michelson Interferometry Summer School will be held at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California, from Monday July 7 through Friday July 11, 2003.

The Summer School will consist of a series of tutorial lectures describing the theory and techniques of optical/infrared long baseline stellar interferometry, from its fundamental principles through to its astrophysical applications, methods of data analysis, and interpretation. Information on previous schools is available, which covered similar topics.

Ground transportation

From LAX, driving directions are available via Mapquest or Yahoo maps.

If you arrive at LAX and need ground transportation to Pasadena, try one of the many shuttle services (also known as "shared ride vans") available on a walk-up basis.  The vans are available outside of LAX baggage claim under the orange sign.

If you are a student staying at the Sheraton, the free hotel shuttle will be available to take you to the Caltech campus in the morning and the evening.  This shuttle has been exclusively reserved for MSS attendees from 7-8 am every morning, and 5:15-6:15 pm on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday.  All other times the shuttle is available on a first-come first-serve basis. Walking from the Sheraton to campus is possible but a long walk (1.75 miles; quite pretty though if you stick to side streets).

Speakers staying at the Athenaeum should be able to easily walk across campus to the Summer School.

Parking

Parking around campus is tricky.  2 hour zones are pervasive and vigorously enforced.  For local students and speakers, all-day parking is available on California (and tends to fill up quickly), on both sides of Wilson south of California (Poly is out of session right now and the west side is thus available for parking in addition to the east side), and in Tournament Park south of the Morrisroe building.

Speakers staying at the Athenaeum can leave their cars there.

Lodging

Students
All students traveling to the Summer School will be staying at the Sheraton Hotel in Pasadena.

Speakers
All speakers traveling to the Summer School will be staying at the Caltech Faculty Club, The Athenaeum, in Pasadena.  The Ath is located at the southeast corner of the Caltech campus at the corner of Hill Avenue and California Boulevard; driving directions are available via Mapquest.

Location

The summer school will be held in the Sharp Lecture Hall of the Arms Building on the Caltech campus, daily from 8:30 am until 5:00 pm.

Dining

Pastries and coffee will be provided each morning at the Summer School.  (Neither the Sheraton nor the Athenaeum provide a free continental breakfast.)  Lunch and an afternoon snack will also be provided every day of the Summer School.

On Thursday, July 10th, a Summer School banquet will be held at 7pm at Burger Continental, 535 S. Lake Avenue (about 2 blocks west of the Caltech campus).  BC is widely regarded as the best in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine in the area.  The cost is $15 per person.  Spouses & significant others of speakers and students are encouraged to attend as well.

Summer School attendees will be free to do as they wish for all other dinners.

Gym

Summer School attendees will have free access to the Caltech gym in Braun on the south end of campus for the duration of the Summer School.  Your MSS badge will be required to gain admittance.

Reception

Sunday evening, July 6th, at 7pm, a reception will be held for the Summer School attendees on the Caltech campus in Dabney Gardens outside of Dabney Hall.  A meal will not be served, but finger foods and a cash bar will be available.  Spouses & significant others of speakers and students are encouraged to attend as well.
